Why I Started This Organization

I founded Integrated Community Resources because my life has taught me, again and again, that trauma lives far longer than the moments that create it—and that the people who carry it on behalf of others are often the ones with the least support.

For more than 25 years I worked in public safety and investigations, including homicide, human trafficking, and undercover internet crimes against children. I witnessed the profound weight that trauma places not only on victims, but also on the law enforcement officers, advocates, counselors, teachers, and medical professionals who stand with them. Even as we protect others, we are rarely given the tools to protect our own wellbeing.

Trauma is also part of my personal story. In 1987, my aunt and uncle, Lois and Rod Houser, were brutally murdered. The impact on my family was deep and lifelong. I saw how trauma reshaped my cousins’ lives, and how a justice system—unaware of its own power to harm—reopened their wounds again and again. That experience became a guiding force in my understanding of what true support must look like.

My work later with tribal communities across the country revealed the layers of historical and generational trauma carried by Indigenous peoples. Their courage, wisdom, and resilience profoundly shaped how I understand healing—culturally, spiritually, and emotionally.

And through all of this, I was also carrying my own unspoken weight from years of exposure to violence, exploitation, and the suffering of others. I did what many in my profession do: I survived by numbing. I survived by staying strong. But eventually I reached a point where I needed a different way forward.

That’s when I met Lindsay Byars.

Lindsay is, in every way, a cofounder of this organization. Her guidance, her Reiki, and her intuitive approach to healing helped me reconnect to emotions I had buried for decades. She taught me how trauma lives in the body, how the nervous system protects us, and how we can return to ourselves with practices that are gentle, grounded, and deeply transformative. What she offered me was life-changing—and it became clear that the tools she shared could help countless others who live in the world of trauma work.

But I have not walked this path alone.

My wife, Lorri, has been a source of unwavering support throughout my entire journey. She has stood beside me through the hardest chapters of my life and career, encouraging my growth, my healing, and my calling to create something that could help others. Her strength, patience, and belief in this mission are woven into the foundation of this nonprofit. Her support gave me the space to become healthier, more grounded, and more connected than I have been in decades.

Integrated Community Resources exists because trauma workers, veterans, Indigenous communities, and those carrying invisible wounds deserve healing that is accessible, meaningful, and rooted in compassion. Our mission is simple:

to teach people how to heal themselves, regulate their nervous systems, and reclaim their lives—using tools that are practical, replicable, and truly transformative.

If our work speaks to you, we welcome your partnership, your presence, and your support. Together, we can build stronger, healthier communities by caring for the people who have spent their lives caring for others.
